The White Sands Missile Range community came together to participate in the Army Substance Abuse Program training event “Connect to Protect: Train Your Mind, Challenge Your Body” Sept. 1 at Desert Emerald Park.
The free event, which was open to the WSMR community, had participants go through nine stations on a one mile course where they received information and had an opportunity to challenge themselves physically with various exercises.
Sandra Class, the White Sands Missile Range Army Substance Abuse Program Manager, said it is important for individuals to participate in events like this because it brings the community together.
“September is Suicide Prevention Month and the Army theme is Connect to Protect: Support is Within Reach, and this is a great opportunity not only to include the military population but also the civilian population and the family in a joint activity that is both competitive and at the same time they will learn what is offered on the installation.”
The first 150 who signed up for the event received a free warm breakfast following the event at the Frontier Club where an awards presentation was held. WSMR Commander Brig. Gen. Eric Little presented participants with awards in three categories: Individual, Team and Family.
