ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md.–Fifteen team leads from across U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command organizations graduated from the Practical Introduction to Supervising Employees, or PRISE, program during a ceremony at the Mallette Training Facility July 1.

PRISE is a new CECOM program designed to develop supervisory skills of GS-13 equivalent employees who are interested in applying for supervisory positions in the future.  The first cohort included 15 team leaders from Army Medical Logistics Command, Integrated Logistics Support Center, Software Engineering Center, Tobyhanna Army Depot and the G-Staff.

Participants received instruction and hands-on experience in topics including the business of CECOM; strategic messaging; critical thinking and problem solving; building a high-performing team; communication and interpersonal skills; and briefing and presentation skills.

“PRISE is an investment in the future of CECOM and the Army,” said Human Resources Specialist Kate  Calvert, CECOM G1 - Talent Management Division.

The long-term training program began in October 2020. Calvert said most of the course was completed virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On July 1, before the graduation ceremony, PRISE participants completed and shared a vision board based on their goals and expectations for the future. Pam Delaine discussed some of the challenges supervisors faced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are trying to integrate to a new normal,” she said.

Delaine called the PRISE graduates “trailblazers.”

“This program is extremely important to the command,” she said. “We want to get people trained up before they become supervisors.”

Participant reflections

Accountant Team Lead Connie Lucas, with CECOM G-8, graduated from the training program and recommends it to others.

“It gave me an insight into my leadership style,” she said. “It gave me some tools to work with employees with different personalities.”

Lucas added that she enjoyed interacting with other CECOM employees who came from diverse backgrounds. They shared different perspectives during the course, she said.

“The team building exercises helped us learn from each other,” she said.

Lucas said she thinks what she learned in the program will be helpful to her in the future.

“A lot of times when you move into a supervisory position, you do not get any training in how to be a good supervisor,” she said.
