Staff Sgt. Nickolaus Mowrer, a Soldier of the Army’s World Class Athlete Program, made his second Olympic appearance today in Tokyo, Japan with the men’s 10 meter air pistol event.

Mowrer, a two-time Pan American medalist, competed against 36 other shooters during the 2020 Summer Olympics’ first official day of competitions.

“Having an opportunity to not only represent the United States of America but the U.S. Army is what it’s all about,” said Mowrer.

The eight-time national record holder held a steady place in the top 15 during the qualification round, coasting at number six at one point, and finished 13th overall with a score of 576. Competitors fire six rounds of 10 shots and the top eight move onto the finals.

“It is hard sometimes when you compete, especially in an environment like this,” said Mowrer. “But I was working hard and getting rewarded for it so it was fun.”

This 2020 Summer Olympics were scheduled for last summer but were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Adversity is always going to be there, but one thing the Army really teaches you is how to deal with it,” said Mowrer “The Army has taught me to have determination and the willingness to stick to the mission. All of those skills have been applicable in this situation.”

Mowrer will also be competing in the 50 meter rifle 3 position and 10 meter air pistol mixed team at the Summer Games.

“I am going to try to retain that image of having fun and what that looked l when I was shooting really good and carry it over to the next competition,” said Mowrer.

Mowrer credits his wife, Tiffany Mowrer, as his biggest support and teammate.  Due to COIVD-19 restrictions, she is following along with his competitions back in America.
