WASHINGTON (June 30, 2021) – The Principal Military Deputy to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology, Lt. Gen. Bob Marion, announced the start of the 8th annual Maj. Gen. Harold J. “Harry” Greene Awards for Acquisition Writing competition, which encourages critical writing focused on Army acquisition issues.

“We have tremendous talent within the acquisition community,” Marion said, “and this annual writing competition is a perfect venue for our workforce professionals and other interested individuals to showcase their ideas, experiences, and expertise to influence the dialogue about meeting and overcoming challenges in delivering capability to our Joint Warfighters.” The competition is open to everyone, he noted, and seeks maximum participation from members of the defense acquisition workforce.
The inaugural competition, launched in June 2014, was designed to allow all persons interested in Army acquisition to share their stories with internal and external audiences. The idea is for all to benefit from their insights, experiences, thoughts, and recommendations. “Harry would be extremely proud of the success of this competition in his honor,” Marion said. “In its eighth year, it continues to challenge prospective authors to think critically and write persuasively on topics of interest to the acquisition profession.”
Prospective authors may submit articles, opinion pieces, or essays from 500 words to 1,800 words in one of four categories including acquisition reform; future operations; innovation; or lessons learned. A distinguished panel of judges evaluates and selects the top entries. The winners and honorable mentions each year are published in a supplement accompanying the Spring edition of Army AL&T magazine. They are also honored at the U.S. Army Acquisition Executive’s Excellence in Leadership Awards Ceremony held in Washington, D.C., at a date to be determined.
Submissions must be unclassified, original, and not previously published or submitted to a writing competition. Four award winners will be selected, one in each category with four additional works selected for honorable mention. All entries must be submitted by email no later than midnight Sept. 30, 2021. Additional information about the competition is at https://www.army.mil/asaalt, including the call for submissions and previous Army AL&T publications showcasing winners and honorable mentions.
The annual acquisition writing competition is named for Maj. Gen. Greene, the Deputy Commanding General of the Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan, who was killed on Aug. 5, 2014, while making a visit to Marshal Fahim National Defense University in Kabul, Afghanistan. “I can think of no better way to honor Harry’s 34 years of distinguished service to our Army and the nation,” Marion said. “He was an inspirational leader and a great communicator, who made lasting contributions to our acquisition community.”
