FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — The United States Army was founded by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1775, to raise troops to fight in the American Revolution. Two years later, on June 14, 1777, the Congress passed an act which established an official flag for the 13 Colonies to unite behind.
With June 14 marking the 246th Army Birthday and National Flag Day, we will celebrate Army Heritage Month to honor our organization’s distinguished history; the diverse cultures and backgrounds of every person in our ranks; and the banner which has flown through 190 campaigns in defense of the United States of America.
Over the past 246 years, Soldiers have stewarded our profession, developing each generation to maintain the best trained, best equipped and most lethal fighting force in world history. Our incredible people — Soldiers and civilians, their families and retirees — have always been, and remain, our Army’s greatest asset. These teammates comprise a diverse group of talented professionals and servant leaders. Their varied backgrounds and viewpoints enable the Army to continue to succeed in every operational environment.
We firmly believe in the importance of celebrating our history, and there are numerous events planned at Fort Leonard Wood to support the Army’s Birthday and Heritage Month.
On June 14 there will be a division-style Army Birthday run and cake-cutting ceremony on Gammon Field at 5:30 a.m., followed by a concert and Retreat Ceremony led by the 399th Army Band starting at 3:30 p.m. on the MSCoE Plaza.
On June 18, we will also host a 5K fun run/walk, which will start at 7 a.m. at Davidson Fitness Center, and a 9-hole golf scramble at 10:00 a.m. at Piney Valley Golf Course.
We will end the month with an Army Heritage Month Organization Day on June 29 at Nutter Field House. Contact your units and follow the Fort Leonard Wood Facebook page for more information.
We are proud to serve with each and every one of you.
Thank you for your service to our Army and Happy Birthday!
