HOHENFELS, Germany — U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria Hohenfels honored 58 local volunteers at the 2021 Volunteer Recognition Ceremony on Tuesday, May 18. This annual event brings attention to the continuing efforts, and support, of all volunteers across the Hohenfels military community.

Without volunteers, Hohenfels would not be able to provide all the services made accessible to the community during the COVID-19 restrictions.

Volunteer of the Year Award Winner:

Local National – Georg Weishaupt with Hohenfels Community Spouses Club

Nominees:

Family Member – Stephanie Potter with Elementary School PTA

Family Member – Erin Walsh with Hohenfels Community and Spouses Club

Family Member – Jared Wiggins with FMWR Sports & Fitness

“Volunteers in our military community help to bridge the gap and vastly improve our daily lives,” said Michelle Turner, president of Hohenfels Community and Spouses’ Club. She said that reduced resources have decreased services in the community. “Volunteering is not always easy. It takes your time and your energy — mentally, emotionally, physically, and sometimes financially. I know this because I have volunteered in many different capacities over the years.”

When asking Hohenfels volunteers why they spend their time and effort volunteering with the community, many said that they feel connected, appreciated and can help others during hardship or separation from loved ones.

Collectively, volunteers throughout the USAG Bavaria military community donated 54,216.81 total hours in 2020. This saved the government approximately $1,474,697.23 last year.

The Volunteer Management Information System is a tool, found at the Army Family Web Portal, to manage volunteer hours within the military community. If you would like to volunteer, register at https://vmis.armyfamilywebportal.com/.
