FORT BENNING, Ga. – Community members joined military leadership at the Fort Benning Main Post Cemetery Thursday to remember our nation’s fallen Soldiers in observance of Memorial Day 2021.
Memorial Day is a United States tradition dating back to 1861, when graves of Civil War Soldiers were first decorated. This year’s ceremony featured remarks from Maj. Gen. Patrick J. Donahoe, commanding general, Maneuver Center of Excellence, followed by an honorary wreath laying at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in memory of all men and women from all military branches that paid the ultimate price for freedom.
“If you are among those who lost a loved one,” Donahoe said. “Use this day to remember them.”
