Task Force leaders focus on readiness, Army's role in disaster response

JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. May 27, 2021 — The 597th Transportation Bde. hosted 2-star Joint Task Force Civil Support Commander Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Van and Command Master Chief Kevin Guy on May 27 to discuss the Army's role in disaster response.

Maj. Gen. Van leads the Nation’s only standing chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear response task force which responds to emergencies such as hurricanes, mass-vaccination clinics, events such as the Super Bowl and national security threats.

The 597th Transportation Bde. and the JTF-CS have a similar mission and can gain efficiencies working and training together, according to Deputy Operations Officer Gene Sullivan.

The visit began with a 597th Transportation Bde. overview followed by Joint Task Force Port Opening discussions and a tour of the 832nd Transportation Battalion's Deployment Readiness Center, where Soldiers with the 688th, 689th and 690th RPOEs train constantly to be ready to respond quickly to crises abroad. The Joint Task Force Civil Support unit anticipates, plans and prepares for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear response operations as well as all-hazards defense support of civil authorities operations. When directed, JTF-CS deploys within 24 hours of notification to command and control Dept. of Defense forces in support of civil authority response operations.
