Twenty-three service members attended the Fort McCoy Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security (DPTMS) Training Workshop on April 8, 2021, in building 905 at Fort McCoy, Wis.

This was the first workshop held by DPTMS to assist unit representatives with the processes and requirements to schedule and hold training at Fort McCoy, said Larry Sharp, DPTMS Training Coordination Branch chief.

"This first workshop was very successful," Sharp said. "We had quite a few attendees who we think will benefit from what they learned."

The workshop took place April 7-8 and participants learned about range safety, range operations, range maps, and more.

The timing of the workshop also was meant to line up with the busiest training time of the year at Fort McCoy, which is typically late spring to early fall.

A year ago, during fiscal year 2020, training was was affected by the global COVID-19 pandemic, which caused the cancellation of training for months at Fort McCoy. The installation rallied in the fourth quarter of the year to bring training back.

That rally helped the installation support the training of 60,054 troops for fiscal year 2020. Considering no training at all took place on post between April and June — usually among the busiest training months on the installation — reaching more than 60,000 troops trained for FY 2020 was a remarkable achievement, officials said.

Now well into fiscal year 2021, training continues at Fort McCoy under the same COVID-19 preventative measures and guidance that brought the training back in July 2020. And, Sharp said, that guidance will stay in place as long as it needs to be.

Sharp added that training numbers for fiscal year 2021 will most definitely exceed the training numbers of the previous fiscal year.

Fort McCoy has supported the training of at least 100,000 troops nearly every year since 1984. An annual-training record of 155,975 was set in fiscal year 2017.

The installation's motto is to be the “Total Force Training Center.” Fort McCoy is also the only U.S. Army installation in Wisconsin.
