FORT RUCKER, Ala. (February 1, 2021) – The assessment, inspection and survey application, part of the family of safety reporting software systems known as the Army Safety Management Information System 2.0, or ASMIS 2.0, underwent a limited release in early January.

The new application encompasses the continuous process of assessing potential exposures and health effects. It provides the capability to evaluate health or safety hazards, assigns a level of risk based on estimated probability and severity, and develops countermeasures based upon identified risks.

Brig. Gen. Andrew C. Hilmes, commander of the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center, said the limited release provides the organization an opportunity to gather user feedback and test the application’s functionality prior to an Armywide release.

“Most importantly,” Hilmes said, “we are able to validate the worthiness of the tool to support safety teams across commands.”

The assessment, inspection and survey application:

·      Implements a comprehensive and current databank of OSHA- and safety-related standards that users may select from to create workplace inspections and safety program assessments tailored to the unit operations and mission.

·      Provides offline capability to download checklists to portable devices, conduct inspections on location, and upload the result for follow-on analysis and presentation.

·      Features an integrated capability to analyze inspection and assessment outcomes and display in tailored outbriefs with standard metrics by facility, unit and hazard category.

·      Creates final a report with standardized metrics with scores, deficiency types, latent failure categories and recommendations.

·      Transfers all hazards into the hazard management application for further analysis, corrective actions and validation.

Last October, the Army released the first ASMIS 2.0 application, the mishap and near miss reporting application, which replaced the legacy tool known as ReportIt. Hazard management; safety and occupational health (SOH) training and education; and unified SOH program management applications are under development and will be individually released over the next few years for a fully operational suite at the end of fiscal 2024.

Hilmes said the new application will have a positive impact on Army organizations’ safety, risk management and loss prevention efforts.

“The Army has never had a tool that encompasses the capability and utility of the assessment, inspection and survey application,” Hilmes said. “I am confident it will aid risk management decision-making as well as increase resources and improve Army readiness.”

ASMIS 2.0 will serve more than 1 million service members on active-duty and in the U.S. Army Reserve and National Guard, and 330,000 Department of the Army Civilians.
