GARMISCH, Germany — Nate Odom, a ninth grader at Munich International School, turned his Eagle Scout service project into reality with the help of volunteers from the Garmisch military community on Saturday, Nov. 21.
After moving to Garmisch with his parents in the summer of 2019, Odom joined Garmisch Troop 50 — sponsored by the Garmisch Community Club. From there he began his service project, which serves as the culminating activity on a Scout’s journey to the most distinguished rank in the Boy Scouts, Eagle.
For Life Scout Odom’s service project, he developed a concept for creating a community garden for USAG Bavaria Garmisch. Once the garrison approved the concept, a comprehensive proposal was developed. The proposal was then sent to the Boy Scouts’ headquarters in Brussels. Once approved, detailed planning, fundraising and recruiting started.
The entire process, from idea to execution, spanned more than six months. Odom, his family, fellow Scouts and the Garmisch community put in approximately one hundred volunteer hours.
While designing and planning his service project, Odom worked closely with Greg Vallery, head of the garrison DPW department and acting deputy garrison manager.
“Nate put in great effort to make his project come together and organize the volunteer group for help,” said Vallery. ” The community garden will be a wonderful place for people to meet and enjoy planting their favorite flowers or veggies. We are glad we have the chance to support him.”
On the morning of Nov. 21, Odom and over 35 members of the Garmisch community set up the basics for a community garden. Volunteers split into teams — one building wooden spruce boxes and the other laying down gravel beds.
After a successful day of building, the garden is now located between the Garmisch Elementary and Middle School and the Pete Burke Center.
“I would like to thank everyone for their time, talent, advice and support,” Odom said after the project was completed.
The purpose of an Eagle Scout service project is for the Scout to demonstrate and apply the leadership and project management skills they learned over the years.
Life Scout Odom still has a few minor requirements to accomplish before he earns the rank of Eagle. In the spring of 2021, the plant boxes will be filled with soil and then assigned to interested community gardeners.
