FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — The Fort Leonard Wood Directorate of Emergency Services recently completed their transition to the new Automated Installation Entry system, or AIE.
However, officials said improvements are still planned in an attempt to minimize wait times at the post’s entry control points while improving security.
“A noticeable change is each access control point is limited to one handheld scanner per lane,” said Rick Vise, DES Installation Physical Security officer. “The previous system allowed up to two handheld scanners per lane. We’re expected to receive a hardware update within the next several weeks as well as a full software upgrade next year, and it is at this time we hope to receive additional handheld scanners.”
Vise said despite the single scanner at each lane, the new system verifies identification roughly three times faster than the Personnel Access Control System used previously.
“AIE scanning verifies the identity of persons needing access to Fort Leonard Wood and authenticates the ID against authoritative, locally produced databases,” Vise said.
In addition, the new system links up with the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System to verify individual’s credentials.
Vise said any Department of Defense credential not properly cleared through DEERS may be confiscated.
To ease entry onto the installation, Vise asked that drivers present all required identification photo side up.
“The gate guard will then ask the driver to turn the ID over so it may be scanned,” Vise added. “Once all IDs have been scanned and there are no issues, access will be granted. If there are any concerns relating to an ID, the driver will be instructed to proceed to an inspection point or the visitor center.”
Anyone with additional questions on the switch to AIE — including retirees, contractors, vendors or individuals with visitor passes — should contact the Visitor Center at 573.596.0356/0590/5327.
