JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. – Runners, on your mark, get set, go! The Joint Base Lewis-McChord Morale, Welfare and Recreation office is hosting a virtual run series October to December to promote physical fitness and friendly competition through the holiday season.

The series for service members, families and community members is a set of three progressive virtual races including a Goblin Gallop 5K Oct. 24 to 31, a Turkey Trot 10K Nov. 14 to 21 and a Rudolph Run 15K Dec. 5 to 12.

Packet pickup for the Goblin Gallop 5k will be 3 to 8 p.m. Oct. 22, Turkey Trot 10k 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 12 and Rudolph Run 15k 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 3.

“Runners have one week from the race date to run their favorite distance route and share their experience on the JBLM Sports, Fitness & Aquatics Facebook event page using hashtag #JBLMsoundliving and #JBLMraces,” said Billy Womble, JBLM MWR intramural and race coordinator. “All race results are recorded virtually using the honor system, and we won’t select winners until the last day of each race.”

Runners can sign up for an individual race for $15 and will receive a race bib and race medal or sign up for the entire series for $35 and receive a race bib, a holiday series champion medal and a finisher's shirt.

“We would like to encourage participants to register for all three races,” Womble said. “Finishers of the series will earn all three race medals that combine into one large champion’s medal.”

Virtual races offer a safe alternative to large social gatherings, and although the results are based on the honesty of the competitors, the format offers many benefits.

“Hosting the runs virtually has given us the opportunity to continue this unique, wholesome experience,” Womble said. “Virtual runs give us flexibility to adhere to COVID-19 safety guidelines while we promote healthy competition, fitness and esprit de corps. We hope participants still enjoy the event, and we’re happy that this format provides more choice about where, when and how our racers run.”
