FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — Patrons, readers and researchers can now instantly access the catalogs of 16 libraries from across U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command through just one single site — the Army University Library System.
Tiffany Konczey, Army University’s Library Enterprise Division chief, said the combination of resources — a project years in the making — would improve the quality of Soldier instruction at Fort Leonard Wood and around the Army.
“As records and resources are shared, AULS will enhance students’ experiences at school and result in a better Soldier,” she said. “Being able to search across all the TRADOC libraries will allow, particularly, the students at each installation, including Fort Leonard Wood, to be aware of all the resources available to them for their research and studies across TRADOC.”
Konczey said Clarke Library was chosen as the integration project’s “master library” due to the accuracy of records in its database.
Monica Duke, Bruce C. Clarke Library director, credited Fort Leonard Wood’s reliability in record-keeping to the work of one person — Shannon Solomon, a technician who catalogs every new resource the library acquires.
“I actually came here from Fort Leavenworth (Kansas), recently, and the first thing I did was look at our catalog to see what we’re dealing with,” she said. “Shannon’s done a really great job, keeping on top of changes and cataloging and making sure that our records were good to go, up to professional cataloging standards.”
Clarke Library has 144,589 records with more added daily — all of which Solomon is responsible for maintaining, Duke said.
“Shannon is one of the most experienced catalogers in the system and is a great benefit to the Army University Library System,” Konczey added.
Duke said the integration will eliminate some previous limitations.
“We already do provide services so that if we don’t own an item, we can get that for you, but this will make it easier for TRADOC libraries to lend to each other,” she said. “We’re all limited budget-wise, obviously, from year to year, but knowing that we can borrow materials from 16 libraries total instead of just relying on our library, it’s going to be very helpful.”
