ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Illinois (Aug. 31, 2020) – In a grand reopening ribbon-cutting ceremony held Aug. 31, Rock Island Arsenal offered its residents and patrons a freshly renovated fitness center.
The center was remodeled over the past several months, and is ready to go into operations while the installation is at Health Protection Condition Bravo due to the COVID-19 virus, according to Garrison Commander Todd J. Allison.
"Some of the things I'd like to brag about today is $600,000 in facility upgrades including resurfacing the basketball court, the pickleball court, as well as our indoor track," said Allison. "We've upgraded the electrical, the roof the HVAC and the entire facility has been repainted."
He also said that 24-hour access to the facility will soon be available.
Features designed to ensure health and safety at the center include spacing the machines, requiring patrons to wear masks during all, but cardio and extreme lifting, and the closure of shower, sauna, and tanning facilities in accordance with CDC guidelines he said.
Maj. Gen. Daniel G. Mitchel, senior commander of Rock Island Arsenal said "(this) meets our warfighters needs better as we move into an era with a new fitness test. We've figured out how to run this place safely."
First Army Commander Lt. Gen. Thomas S. James thanked everyone involved with putting the new facility together.
"In First Army, our vision is a team of fit Army professionals enabling total force readiness," said James. "The fit portion of that is to sustain ground combat and that includes the physical fitness. This facility allows us to maintain that fitness."
The ceremony concluded as the generals, the garrison commander and Family, Morale and Welfare officials cut the ribbon to officially reopen the facility.
