Independence Day honors the birthday of the United States of America and the signing of the

Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. It is a day of picnics and patriotic parades, a night

of concerts and fireworks, and a reason to fly the American flag.

Many of you will be traveling on the roads and highways to be with Family and friends.

Soldiers are reminded that the use of the online application TRIPS is mandatory if you are

leaving the local area of your duty station. Discuss your plans with your supervisor, and take the

time to closely inspect your vehicle.

If your activities involve the use of fireworks, remember that improper handling causes severe

injury and the possibility of unintentional fire is very real. Always have a bucket of water ready

in case of accidental fire when using fireworks.

Apply Composite Risk Management principles and anticipate the hazards of any planned

activity. Supervise your Family, and let this be an accident-free holiday.

Our command is diverse and operating in a number of locations. We cannot overemphasize

the need to be aware of the hazards of your off-duty activities during this holiday period. There

are a number of safety information guides on the USASMDCIARSTRAT website under "Safety

Center." Leaders should use these guides when discussing off-duty plans with their Soldiers.

The infomation is valuable to Civilians and Family members, and provides critical safety

information concerning recreational activities.
