FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — The U.S. Army Engineer School bid farewell to Command Sgt. Maj. Douglas Galick during a Relinquishment-of-Responsibility ceremony June 4 in the Engineer Regimental Room at the John B. Mahaffey Museum Complex.

Galick assumed the role of top enlisted Soldier at the Engineer School in February 2019. He is transitioning to Honolulu, Hawaii, after being selected as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pacific Ocean Division command sergeant major.

“As they depart Fort Leonard Wood, we’re not losing Sgt. Maj. Galick and his family, but rather, we’re going to share them with the rest of the Army,” said. Brig. Gen. Mark Quander, USAES commandant. “The Army needs his talents and skills as he takes on increased responsibility.”

Quander said over the past 18 months, Galick performed his mission of driving change and dominating the engineer proponency space.

“He has not only driven change, but he has achieved incredible results,” Quander added. “He’s led and directed Engineer Regiment proponency, he’s enhanced organizational effectiveness and he has been that indispensable link between guidance and execution. He’s been a teacher, a coach and a mentor while enforcing the standards demanded of our Army profession.”

Galick said he is grateful he had the opportunity to “come back home and serve the Regiment.”

“When I was selected for this position, I was extremely excited and looking forward to my time here at Fort Leonard Wood,” he said. “We were immediately welcomed into the Team of Teams and that really made everything even more special.”

He added, “I got to be the 27th Regimental and Engineer School command sergeant major. The title and responsibility that comes with that is enough to fulfill multiple years of happiness for any engineer leader, but I think my case was special and I’m certain that my experience in this position was much more rewarding than any of my predecessors.”

Galick said he was privileged to work for “the two best Engineer officers the Army has to offer.”

“Both Brig. Gen. Quander and (Deputy Chief of Engineers and Deputy Commanding General) Maj. Gen. (Robert) Whittle impressed me every single day,” he said. “Their ability to listen to, absorb, understand and master all things engineer was truly astonishing.”

Lastly, Galick thanked his wife and son.

“I’m learning every day,” he said. “I’m learning new ways to spend my time, learning new ways to share my love. I feel like my fathering skills are progressing nicely – definitely not fast enough for my wife, but in fairness, I’m a slow learner.”

Galick closed his speech by thanking everyone for their friendship.

“Best of luck to you all; stay healthy; and be kind to one another,” he said.
