Army Child and Youth Services celebrates 40 years, while the DoD’s April awareness campaigns focus on “Standing for Mil kids” and child abuse prevention month in the midst of the COVID-19 response.
Some officials say, Yongsan’ s earning the National Association for the Education of Young children (NAEYC) accreditation is a mark of quality. Parents may have a different answer, since their ability to provide a successful response to pandemic on-installation was/is directly impacted by having quality childcare.
“We see now more than ever the importance of having a quality Child Development Center (CDC) and child care program. The CDC and Child Youth Services (CYS) staff are vital to the Army’s mission and I’m proud our staff was able to complete the rigorous process despite many challenges, including COVID-19 response” said Col. Monica P. Washington, the U.S. Army Garrison commander of Yongsan-Casey. “We see in this environment [COVID-19] that “protecting the force means protecting our children and families too. Our CDC worked hard to develop special programs and activities to assist families who had unique care requirements due to their mission-essential status.”
The CDC and CYS has served the Yongsan community for about 35 years. Children six weeks to 11 years may be enrolled for on-post full-day, part-day, and hourly child-care programs. The care is provided by trained staff and operations are subject to Department of Defense (DoD) Certifications and standards.
“This gives the families in our community that have children enrolled in CYS programs, the confidence their children are receiving the best care possible, said Jeff Wertz, the USAG Yongsan-Casey director of Family, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation for Areas I and II. “I can’t thank the staff enough for all they do and continue to do in response to recent events.”
“The CYS staff takes great pride in the care they provide the children and youth of our community, and retaining accreditation is a tribute to their job performance and desire to make Yongsan programs some of the best in the U.S. Army,” he said.
NAEYC accredited programs ensure the CDC’s environment, policies, and practices are aligned with standards and demonstrates compliance with the NAEYC Early Learning Program’s required practices.
