VILSECK, Germany -- The 1st Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment basketball team, the War Eagles, won the USAG-Bavaria Basketball Championship on Feb. 27, 2020, for the second consecutive year.
The War Eagles easily defeated Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 7th Army Training Command 50-35 at the Memorial Gym at Rose Barracks, Germany.
The War Eagles started their season in November 2019 with a team of 10 players. The majority of the team, including the coach (Sgt.) Danarian Early, came from the forward support troop, Dakota Troop.
"We are humble and hustle," said Early when asked about what has made them successful. He doesn't have a star player or winning plays but focuses on the basics. "We will play as a team and won't overlook any of our opponents."
Only a week before the championship began the War Eagles returned from Kriegsadler II, a training exercise in France. At the live fire exercise, they spent three weeks in the cold rain, driving winds, and snow that prevented the team from practicing. Yet after exercise, the War Eagle team came together with their winning combination of teamwork and humility.
The War Eagles move on to the IMCOM-Europe Championship on March 14 at Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany. Last year the War Eagles finished in third place.
Dakota Troop commander and power forward, Capt. Kirk Porter, makes it clear humility does not dampen their ambition, "We are excited to continue our season, with our eyes set on the championship."
