FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. -- Blanchfield Army Community Hospital earned The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval� again, during its triennial review for hospital accreditation, by demonstrating continuous compliance with the commission's performance standards, officials announced Jan. 21. The Gold Seal is a symbol of quality that reflects a health care organization's commitment to providing safe and quality patient care.
The hospital also received the Gold Seal of Approval for its behavioral health program.
"Receiving The Joint Commission's Gold Seal Hospital Accreditation and Behavioral Health Program Accreditation exemplifies what our team stands for and works daily to achieve. Sharing this news with our team is one of the most gratifying recognitions to share, letting them know that they are acknowledged for their efforts and deserving of the Gold Seal accreditation recognition," said Col. Patrick T. Birchfield, hospital commander.
Blanchfield underwent a rigorous, unannounced onsite review late last year. During the visit, a team of The Joint Commission reviewers evaluated compliance with hospital standards spanning several areas including emergency management, life safety, national patient safety goals, environment of care, infection prevention and control, leadership, medication management, and rights and responsibilities of the individual.
The Joint Commission's standards are developed in consultation with health care experts and providers, measurement experts and patients. They are informed by scientific literature and expert consensus to help health care organizations measure, assess and improve performance. The surveyors also conducted onsite observations and interviews.
"As a private accreditor, The Joint Commission surveys health care organizations to protect the public by identifying deficiencies in care and working with those organizations to correct them as quickly and sustainably as possible," says Mark Pelletier, RN, MS, chief operating officer, Accreditation and Certification Operations, and chief nursing executive, The Joint Commission. "We commend Blanchfield Army Community Hospital for its continuous quality improvement efforts in patient safety and quality of care."
Birchfield served as the Troop Battalion commander at Blanchfield two years before taking command and said he was excited to return and help lead the team through the triennial review.
"The team works daily to determine ways to improve processes and exceed patient expectations by offering reliable and safe, quality healthcare. It is truly an honor to be leading such a fantastic group of experts in their field who place patient safety first." said Birchfield.
The hospital supports the medical readiness of Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and Fort Campbell, Kentucky as well as serving retirees and family members on post and from the community surrounding Fort Campbell. Blanchfield offers a patient-centered care model of healthcare, recognizing the patient is the center of customized care, according to each patient's medical needs.
Blanchfield offers both Soldier and Patient-Centered Medical Homes for the more than 73,000 enrolled beneficiaries receiving primary care. In addition, numerous specialty care, including emergency medicine, surgery, integrated disability evaluation, traumatic brain injury, behavioral health, women's health, inpatient care and many more services, are provided to nearly 100,000 eligible beneficiaries on post and from the surrounding communities.
