The following was written by Sgt. 1st Class Mark F. Ounan, an Active/ Guard infantry Soldier currently assigned to the 324th Military Police Btn., Chambersburg, Pa. Ounan is also the only current Soldier and Military Vehicle Preservation Association member taking place in the 2009 MVPA Convoy. Here's an exert from the journal he's keeping as he travels cross-country.
Today is our first rest day. This means that we will stay in one place for an entire day and use that time to work on our equipment.
My friend Dan Kerr, an expert on Dodge Brothers equipment, drove from his home in Pittsburgh to spend the day helping me work on the car. We pulled the wheels off, repacked the bearings and put in new seals. Hopefully this will prevent grease from getting on the brakes.
One of the trucks blew a head gasket. In tearing it down, the motor pool guys found that the block was cracked. In several hours, a new engine was located and delivered. The motor pool guys worked all night to have it installed and running in time to leave early the next morning.
Now that we are out of the mountains of Pennsylvania and onto the flat plains of Ohio the car is running much better. And I'm getting less jeers from the guys who drive the 2 1/2 ton trucks, because I've been slowing them down. It's all in fun, and I know that if I break down they will be the first ones to pull over and help.
As we pulled into Delphos, Ohio, I noticed transmission gear oil dripping on the ground. This leak seems to be very fast. Climbing under the car I saw that the oil was coming from an overflow valve. We added some more oil, and I will keep an eye on it tomorrow.
