RICHMOND, Va. -- Surrounded by Army children, Gov. Tim Kaine ceremonially signed a General Assembly bill to enact the Military Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunities for Military Children during a June 16 ceremony at the Virginia Capitol building.

The legislation addresses the challenges encountered by military children when their families relocate to duty stations in states with varying transfer and graduation requirements. Virginia joins 20 other states who have signed the compact, thus agreeing to uniform practices to include transfer of records, course sequencing and placement, graduation requirements, exclusion from extra-curricular activities, testing, entrance-age variations and other transition issues.

According to Governor KaineAca,!a,,cs office, Virginia is home to 76,352 school-aged children of active-duty military, more than any other state in the nation. There are 156,000 active-duty military personnel stationed in the Commonwealth, as well as 26,000 reservists and 10,000 members of the Virginia National Guard.
