The Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region and the U.S. Army Military District of Washington celebrated the U.S. Air Force's 72nd birthday at a ceremony held at Fort Lesley J. McNair, Sept. 18.

Service members and civilians gathered for a cake cutting ceremony and an opportunity to acknowledge and honor the service of the command's Airmen and Air Force civilian workforce.

"I really appreciate all of you coming out to celebrate the Air Force birthday with us," said Maj. Rick Pohlsander before sharing a short video. "We have three core values -- integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do. This video is on that third core value about excellence. So hopefully, it's not just something that the Airmen appreciate, but something that will motivate all of us to provide excellence in all that we do here at the Joint Force Headquarters -- National Capital Region."

The United States Air Force recognizes Sept. 18, 1947, as its birth date. On that date, the Air Force became the fourth branch of the Department of Defense with the implementation of the National Security Act of 1947.
