ANSBACH, Germany (September 5, 2019) -- Did you know that every unit, down to the company level, and each tenet organization that is located in Germany, must appoint a primary and alternate Environmental Officer?
The U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach Environmental Management Division (EMD) is offering the 40-hour Environmental Officer (EO) training class to appointed environmental officers. Each appointed primary and alternate EO must complete this training.
"Environmental Officer training is important because it gives an individual the knowledge on how deal with possible environmental issues that may occur in the workplace," said Shawn Haynes, an EMD environmental specialist. "Information on how to react to an environmental issue such as an oil spill, or knowing how to correctly organize a hazardous material storage area can be vital for your safety as well as the organization you are responsible for."
According to the Army's Europe Regulations 200-1-20-8, garrison commanders will "require all subordinate and tenant organizations to appoint and train environmental officers at appropriate organizational levels to ensure required environmental-compliance actions take place."
"This training designates and qualifies individuals within our units to act as advisors to the commander on environmental issues. These individuals will also act as points of contact for Headquarters USAREUR and other organizations for environmental standards, requirements and reporting," said Col. Steven M. Pierce, USAG Ansbach commander. "It's an important training and one that USAG Ansbach is determined to support."
Additionally, Army Regulation 200-1-23-H requires that Senior Mission Commanders "appoint trained environmental officer(s) to ensure operational compliance and coordination with installation environmental staff."
The EMD, in conjunction with IMCOM-E, will conduct an Environmental Performance Assessment & Assistance System audit on Sept. 16-20, and any units without EOs will receive a "Finding."
"An organization receives a finding when an auditor observes a missing environmental requirement or a potential environmental issue," Haynes said. "Excessive findings can negatively impact an organization's rating and will be given a reasonable amount of time to be corrected."
This course can be completed during face-to-face training that is scheduled for 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 9-13 in the SHARP Training Room in Bldg. 5814 on Katterbach Kaserne.
The course can also be completed online at http://imcom-e.eo-training.com/. Online training must be completed by Sept. 30.
