Lines at the gates were long Aug. 21, not just from 1st Battalion, 34th Infantry Regiment's Family Day, but from another event taking place on post -- the first day of school.

A new year means new learning opportunities as well as a chance to meet and make new friends.

The sidewalks throughout the installation's housing areas were buzzing with activity as parents walked with their children for the first day of school, even family pets were seen walking along.

Children were lined up in front of the schools, some holding signs, as their parents snapped "first day" photos with their phones and tablets.

"We are excited to welcome our students back to C.C. Pinckney," said Ryan Smith, Pinckney's new principal. "All of the smiling faces and positive energy our students bring, truly makes our building glow. Our teachers are eager and committed to achieving student success, all day, every day.

Teachers welcomed their new students and after signing their children into school, they got a sneak peek from the classroom door at where their children will be spending their school year.

"The 2019-2020 school year has started and we are full steam ahead to a great year," Smith said.
