FORT BELVOIR, Va. - A cool, cloudy morning made for great running conditions Saturday morning as Fort Belvoir hosted the Potomac Valley Association Preliminary Junior Olympics track meet at Pullen Field.

The sun stayed at bay for much of the afternoon, allowing a cool breeze to soothe runners from track clubs around the region. The teams gathered at Belvoir for the USA Track and Field-sanctioned event, including McLean Youth Track, Southwestern Youth Association and the Fairfax Police Youth Club.

A trip to the Potomac Valley Association championships at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md. June 18 was at stake. Saturday's top six performers per age group advanced to that meet, and a top-five finish at the Association meet leads to the USA Track and Field Region III championships, also in Landover, July 9 to 12.

Saturday's event assured Belvoir will be well represented at the championship, as several athletes from the Sonic Boom track club qualified for the championships in different age groups and events across the board.

There was a near-Sonic Boom shutout in the girls' sub-bantam 200m dash, as Belvoir runners took the first five slots.

Sonic Boom's girls saw success in the field events as well, as Emily Maguder and Deasia Turner took first and second in the high jump for the youth girls' category. Maguder also qualified for the youth girls' 400m dash with a sixth-place finish.

Alexandra Capitol won first place in the young women's long jump and triple jump.

Angelo Martin brought home first-place victories in both the sub-bantam boys 100m and 200m dashes Saturday.

Joshua Breece won the 100m dash, placed second in the 400m dash and still had enough in the tank for a first-place finish in the long jump for the bantam boys' category.
