REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. -- With thanks to God, his family, and the mentors and leaders at Army Materiel Command, newly promoted Maj. Gen. Chris Mohan is now setting his sights on serving as the Army's commander of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command in Germany.
During a promotion ceremony officiated by AMC Commanding General Gen. Gus Perna Thursday at AMC Headquarters, Mohan donned his second star in front of a small group that included family, friends and coworkers.
"I've never worked for a better boss. I have good fond memories of working here and of the staff here," Mohan said of his 10-month assignment as the AMC deputy chief of staff for Logistics and Operations, and director of AMC G-3 (Operations).
"This has been the hardest job I've ever had. Most days when I leave here I am beat. But I'm never sad about coming back to work the next day because what we do is important. I never think what we are doing is wasted because of the vision and guidance Gen. Perna has given us."
Mohan will report to his new assignment in the next few weeks. It is the 17th move for him and his wife Cindy, a school teacher, during his 26-year career.
In his comments, Perna thanked Mohan for leaving a command assignment to run AMC G-3.
"For the last 10 months, we have been rolling hard. You have done a magnificent job. I am so grateful you came in to lead the G-3, that you left command to come be part of the AMC staff," Perna said. "We are going to send you to Germany and to be in command again. I know today is not really about getting promoted. It's about taking command."
Mohan more than meets the qualifications to be a two-star general, Perna said, exhibiting the leadership traits that made him an easy selection.
As he reviews officers for promotion through the general officer ranks, Perna said there are four elements that set leaders apart -- competence, commitment, character and the ability to make decisions on a daily basis as an Army leader.
"In these four areas, Chris checks them all," Perna said.
Mohan's previous command assignments include Tooele Army Depot, Utah; 80th Ordnance Battalion, 593rd Sustainment Brigade, 1 Corps, Fort Lewis, Washington and Operation Iraqi Freedom; Alpha Forward Support Company (Airborne), Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, North Carolina and Operation Enduring Freedom; and 664th Ordnance Company, 553rd Corps Support Battalion, 64th Support Group (Corps), III Corps, Fort Hood, Texas. He has deployed in support of Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and has completed multiple deployments in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
In preparing for his next assignment, Mohan said he has benefitted from the guidance and mentorship from Perna, and all the leaders and staff at AMC.
"I have learned so much from all of you, and I am so grateful from your mentorship and friendship," Mohan said. "You have really supported me. As the Army carries the ruck sack of the nation, the G-3 carries the ruck sack of the Army Materiel Command.
"I am thrilled to go back to command. But, I'm leaving a bunch of great friends and that's what I'm sad about. And, for my family, I am so very proud of you. I wouldn't be here without you. So, I am forever grateful and blessed. Therefore, by the grace of God, I go."
