Summer break is here and the Carolina heat is in full effect. Many kids are enjoying their new found freedom and break from the rigorous school schedule. Although this is a time to step back from the books, kids shouldn't take a break from their physical activities. Screen time and video game usage goes up and physical fitness declines during these crucial months.
Parents should add as much physical activities to their child's schedule as possible. Aim to get 30-60 minutes of aerobic and muscle strengthening activities per day. Don't be afraid to try new activities or make it a family affair. Here's a list of some local ideas:
n Visit Palmetto Falls Waterpark for a fun filled day of splash pads, lazy river, and water slides
n Family black light bowling at Century Lanes
n Sign your child up for an extracurricular activity through the Fort Jackson SKIES program (karate, dance, gymnastics, tennis, swim lessons)
n Shoot basketball at the multipurpose court on Chestnut Road behind the teen center
n Go on a bike ride around the housing units on Fort Jackson
n Enjoy the Carolina sunshine at Legion outdoor swimming pool
n Play a few games of tennis at the Semmes Road tennis court
n Sign your child up for free First Tee golf lessons through Youth Sports/SKIES
Be the example for your kids and get up, get active, and be fit.
