NATICK, Mass. (Jun. 4, 2019) -- At the direction of U.S. Army leadership, the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, based in Fort Detrick, Maryland, has been re-designated as the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (MRDC) and has realigned to the Army Futures Command (AFC), as of June 1.
One of MRDC's subordinate laboratories, the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), which is based in Natick, Massachusetts, held a patching ceremony on Monday morning to formally represent their realignment under AFC.
"This is a significant milestone in the history of Army medical research," said Col. Sean O'Neil, commander of USARIEM. "The transition centralizes all research and development, including medical, under one command -- AFC. As a subordinate of AFC, MRDC is integrated within the Army's single command focused on modernization and next-generation technology, and can capitalize on the expertise already inherent within the expertise."
Under AFC, MRDC will continue to manage and execute the Army's medical science and technology programs for battlefield medical solutions, including biomedical research in military infectious diseases, combat casualty care, military operational medicine, medical chemical and biological defense, and clinical and rehabilitative medicine.
"Collectively, we will 'Forge the Future' to ensure our Warfighters remain ready to dominate in multi-domain operations," O'Neil said. "USARIEM's efforts to optimize warfighter health and performance are as relevant as ever. I'm proud of everything this institute has accomplished and look forward to its continued successes."
