ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Illinois -- (April 27, 2019) On April 27-28, the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System Illinois conducted a full-scale exercise at sites located in Patoka and Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois. The exercise evaluated the response of MABAS resources to a complex coordinated terrorist attack.
The Rock Island Arsenal site involved the response of MABAS resources to an incident involving a statewide activation of specialized resources. For Rock Island Arsenal, MABAS activated its Rapid Resource Response (or Triple R). The Triple R task force consisted of a statewide deployable technical rescue team, a statewide deployable hazardous materials team, and small cadre of members of the Illinois Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 1 that serve in a command and control role. Several Triple R task forces worked continuously over the weekend. In addition, Rock Island area emergency management agencies, Rock Island Arsenal resources, MABAS Unmanned Arial Systems (UAS) and MABAS water rescue resources were involved.
Darin Keith, training officer and fire investigator, Rock Island Arsenal Fire & Emergency Services, said, "Great work by all involved in the MABAS Triple R exercise held this weekend at the Rock Island Arsenal."
Keith said there were four HAZMAT teams, four technical rescue teams, two drone teams, and two water/sonar teams that responded over a 24-hour period from across the State of Illinois.
"Scott County EMA (Emergency Management Agency) was able to test their personnel tracking system, Salamander, and join it with the MABAS credentialing system to show how agencies are able to work together and track resources," said Keith. "Great work to those working in the wet and cold weather Saturday and those that were lucky enough to have dryer weather today (Sunday)."
The training at the Arsenal took place at the Directorate of Emergency Services Fire Training Facility on the south side of the installation.
The Patoka location involved the response of local and divisional (or regional) fire, emergency medical services, technical rescue, hazardous materials, law enforcement, and local emergency management agency members.
