FORT BRAGG, N.C. - Two U.S. Army Special Operations Forces icons, Col. Charles R. Munske and Lt. Col. Leif Bangsboll, both deceased, were inducted into the U.S. Special Operations Command's Commando Hall of Honor, in a ceremony held MacDill Air Force Base, Florida, April 18, 2019.
Col. Munske is the first Civil Affairs officer to be inducted into the Hall. A World War I veteran, he joined CA in 1944 and served post-World War II occupation duty in Japan. As a CA officer in Korea, he served as the 'mayor' of P'yongyang during the brief allied occupation of the Communist capital in late 1950. He remained in CA, retiring in February 1958. Col. Munske is the namesake of the headquarters building of the 95th CA Brigade, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
A native of Denmark, Lt. Col. Bangsboll joined the OSS in World War II. On the night of October 5, 1944, Bangsboll parachuted into his Nazi-occupied country and served with resistance forces until victory in Europe. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Bangsboll joined newly-created Special Forces in May 1952, and helped to develop the program of instruction for the qualification course. Lt. Col. Bangsboll served in the 10th and 77th Special Forces Groups before retiring in April 1963.
The USSOCOM Commando Hall of Honor, established in 2010, recognizes those who have served with great distinction and have demonstrated leadership and selfless service within the SOF community.
