FORT BUCHANAN, PR- Soldiers, civilian employees and community leaders gathered at the 1st Mission Support Command headquarters to celebrate the 111th Birthday of the Army Reserve, April 23.
"This is a great day for the Army Reserve. Each one of you represent something bigger than yourselves," said Brig. Gen. Dustin A. Shultz, Commanding General of the 1st Mission Support Command, U.S. Army Reserve-Puerto Rico, during her remarks.
Shultz also highlighted the relevancy of the Army Reserve in Puerto Rico.
"During the emergency created by hurricanes Irma and Maria, the Soldiers of the Army Reserve worked along with the National Guard in service to the local communities. That is why today we celebrate this organization's birthday as part of the total force," added the senior federal Army officer in the Caribbean.
Earlier during the day, Shultz and Command Sgt. Maj. Robert Breck, senior non commissioned officer in the region, participated in media interviews, explaining the importance of the Army Reserve's birthday and the future of the organization.
"We create jobs, and make a significant economic impact in Puerto Rico. We are also projecting to bring additional units and Soldiers to the command in the near future," said Shultz during a live television interview at Channel 4.
With approximately 5,000 Soldiers and 18 Ready Force X units, the U.S. Army Reserve Caribbean Geographical Command has deployed 100 percent of its units since the year 2001, in support of the needs of the Nation.
Currently the largest federal U.S. Army command in the Caribbean has approximately 400 Soldiers deployed to Poland, Afghanistan, Qatar, and other countries around the world.
Since 2016, the Army Reserve has been moving to a new state of operational readiness and modernization to ensure a significant portion of the force is able to rapidly support the Active Component with critical capabilities.
