FORT CARSON, Colorado - A ribbon cutting ceremony outside the 1st Space Brigade's newly renovated facility here April 11 signified the official transfer of their headquarters to Fort Carson.
U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command, 1st Space Brigade, which stood up in 2001, is not new to the Colorado Springs area. The brigade headquarters moved to the mountain post from a leased facility in Colorado Springs to meet the growing needs of the command's Army Space Soldiers.
Led by Col. Eric Little, commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. Robert Bell, the 1st Space Brigade's mission is to provide trained and ready space forces to conduct continuous global space force enhancement, space support, space control and special missions in support of combatant commanders, U.S. government agencies and international partners.
Before the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon, Little addressed the attendees, which included presiding official Lt. Gen. James H. Dickinson, commanding general of USASMDC/ARSTRAT, several former 1st Space Brigade commanders, and numerous Soldiers.
He said the answer to why the brigade moved to Fort Carson after all of these years is because it is an Army post and this is an Army brigade.
"It makes sense," Little said. "As the Army's only space brigade, we certainly have a unique mission set, but we are not different."
"We are an Army formation. We do Army things and we uphold the Army standard and ethos," he continued. "It is critically important that we run the same (physical training) routes, that we fire in the same qualification ranges, that we live in the same barracks, and break bread in the same dining facility with our infantry, artillery and logistics brothers and sisters who reside on this great installation."
Little thanked the Fort Carson command team and the garrison command team for their "tremendous support throughout the transition and move to the mountain post."
"There is no question that the 1st Space Brigade is part of the Fort Carson team, and that is very much appreciated," he said.
After the official remarks, the ceremonial ribbon was cut by Dickinson and Little followed by a reception and facility tour.
