ACS helps secure financial freedoms

By Ms. Alexandra Shea (Army Medicine)April 15, 2019

April is Financial Capability Month, and Fort Jackson's Army Community Service financial counselors stand ready to help secure financial freedoms for all Department of Defense ID card holders.

Each Tuesday during the month, ACS is offering lunch and learn seminars that teach attendees how to become financially resilient through reducing debt, repairing credit and maximizing benefits that were earned through military service and retirement.

This Tuesday's topic, titled "Do-It-Yourself Credit Repair," will show attendees how to identify credit report mistakes and the processes to repair negative credit. Resources will be provided to help further credit repair to include where to obtain a full credit report free of charge.

"This class focuses entirely on credit," said Angela Crosland, ACS financial readiness program manager. "By having this course, we teach you the tricks and tips of what to do and not to do and give you resources that help build financially resilient communities."

According to Crosland, investing time and utilizing a few simple steps to remove erroneous negative credit has the potential to save someone thousands of dollars a year in high interest rate and costs of paying a third party service to repair credit reports.

"We are a free resource," Crosland said. "We try to caution everyone on a person who stands to make money on your situation, (like) someone who sells products like debt consolidation loans."

Crosland said all financial counseling services offered through ACS are free of charge and available to all DOD ID card holders.

The remaining month's classes will provide information to maximize social security and Veteran Affairs benefits.

For those unable to attend any of the month's seminars, financial counselors stand ready to offer assistance for credit repair, benefits education, budgeting, retirement saving information and investment options.

To make an appointment with a financial counselor or to reserve a seat during one of the lunch and learn seminars, call ACS at 751-5256.
