REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (Nov. 12, 2018) -- The U.S. Army Research, Development, and Engineering Command's Aviation and Missile Center, also known as AMRDEC, is committed to recruiting a diverse and highly skilled corps of scientists and engineers.
This year, AMRDEC attended career fairs for the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers and the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference. Attending fairs like these facilitates outreach, recruiting, and branding activities targeting underrepresented communities, in particular.
"We are striving to expand our recruitment efforts to capture talent from areas outside our local commuting area as we continue to diversify our workforce," said Amanda Compton, an employee with the center's human resources department.
Typically, four to five representatives from AMRDEC will attend these types of conferences. The group includes technical experts, hiring managers, and other HR personnel.
Carelyn Martinez represented AMRDEC's Engineering Directorate at this year's HENAAC fair. "Our exposure [at] these career fairs [is] extremely important to help us expand and promote who we are and the amazing high-caliber job we perform to support the technology and readiness of the U.S. Army aviation and missile systems, ultimately reaching the hands of our Warfighters," said Martinez.
"It has been proven that organizations that can recruit and retain a diverse workforce have a strong competitive advantage along with increase in internal innovation and creativity," she added.
At this year's HENAAC event, some AMRDEC employees acted as judges during the conference's College Bowl. The college bowl is a unique event that gives college students the opportunity to showcase their talents, teamwork, and leadership skills in competition against one another while being coached and judged by industry and government representatives. Students who place first, second, and third have the opportunity to win scholarships.
