It's that time of year again for Fort Knox High School seniors and military spouses -- time to apply for college scholarships.
While some scholarship application deadlines have passed, many still remain up for grabs. Spouses interested in scholarships will find the list at the bottom of the high school senior list. The following is a list of some of the scholarships still available, including deadlines and links:
For high school seniors:
• Larue County Order of the Eastern Star is offering a new scholarship. See Jacqueline Prather for details and an application form.
• Fort Knox Federal Credit Union is offering is offering four $1,000 scholarships. See Prather to pick up an application, or download a fillable form at https://www.fortknoxfcu.org/roush-scholarship.html. Deadline to apply is April 1.
• The Fort Knox Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club is offering scholarships to seniors with at least a 2.0 GPA. See Prather for an application. Deadline to apply is March 29.
• The 1st Lieutenant Tom Martin Scholarship offers students $2,000. See Prather for a packet, or download forms at https://tommartinfoundation.org/scholarships/. Deadline to apply is March 30.
• The Major Samuel Woodfill Chapter announces its scholarship program for children and spouses of U.S. Army Soldiers in the Global War on Terrorism, Army Soldiers and Army veterans who are currently serving or have served in the Global War on Terrorism, and family members of AUSA members who belong to the Major Samuel Woodfill Chapter in that priority. Also, priority is given to residents of Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to first-time freshmen and returning college students. • The American Legion Hardin Post 113 offers a scholarship to one senior who plans on attending a college, university or vocational school. See your guidance counselor for an application. Deadline is April 5. Post 113 also offers one scholarship to an area student who plans on attending a college, university or vocational school. See your guidance counselor for an application. Deadline to apply is April 15.
• The Nu Beta Zeta Chapter of the Zeta Phi Sorority, Inc., is offering a scholarship to a female senior with a minimum GPA of 3.0. See Prather to pick up a packet. Deadline is April 15.
• Bluegrass Cellular is offering 12 $1,500 scholarships to seniors whose parents are Bluegrass Cellular customers. Students must also have a 2.5 GPA. See Prather for a paper application, or go online to www.bluegrasscellular.com/scholarships for more information and an application. Deadline to apply is March 29.
• Morehead State has a free application right now. Enter promo code jan2019 to apply.
• A new scholarship is available from Kappa Epsilon Psi Sorority. Pick up a packet from Prather. Deadline to apply is April 1.
• Daughters of the Cincinnati gives college scholarships averaging $4,000 a year to the daughters of career commissioned officers of the U.S. armed services. Selection is based on merit and financial need. For an application and individual requirements, visit www.daughters1894.org. Deadline to apply is March 15.
• Kentucky Federation of Republican Women is offering a $1,500 scholarship to a college-bound high school senior girl. The qualified applicant must be politically active within the Republican Party and plan to register Republican. See Prather to pick up an application. Deadline to apply is April 1.
• The UNCF scholarship program has started. Students are considered eligible to be considered for a UNCF scholarship if they: are African Americans, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian and Pacific Islander Americans, or Hispanic Americans who are citizens, legal permanent residents or nationals of the United States; have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (unweighted); will be enrolling for the first time at a U.S. accredited college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking, first-year student in the fall of 2019; hold a minimum of a GED and have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities; meet the federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria; and have all three forms (Nominee Personal Information Form completed by the student, Nominator Form completed by an educator familiar with the student's academic record and a Recommender Form completed by a person familiar with the student's leadership and community service) submitted by the deadline. • There are many scholarships available through the Horatio Alger Association. Visit https://scholars.horatioalger.org/scholarships/ for more information. Deadlines vary.
• Thurgood Marshall College Fund offers numerous scholarships that are available online for students attending a historically black college or university. Visit www.tmfc.org/ for eligibility criteria as well as the application process. Deadlines vary.
• All seniors are encouraged to register at the following websites for scholarship information throughout the year: www.fastweb.com, www.scholarships.com, www.kheaa.com, http://www.studentscholarships.org/ and www.tuitionfundingsources.com.
• The Post 9/11 GI Bill provides soldiers and/or their dependents the financial assistance for all of your college needs, including tuition, housing, and books. We recommend all parents visit www.gibill.va.gov for more information.
For military spouses:
• The Spouse Education Assistance Program provides needs-based scholarships for spouses of Soldiers (active, retired or of a Soldier who died on active duty). Recipients are eligible to receive scholarships for up to four years of full-time enrollment or eight years of part-time enrollment in an accredited college or university. Funds may be used for tuition, fees, books, supplies, ESL and GED classes, CLEP and TOEFL tests. Scholarships may not be used for second undergraduate degrees or master's programs. The application, as well as more information, is available on the AER website at www.aerhq.org.
