The first baby born in the new year at Irwin Army Community Hospital was born Jan. 1 at 12:57 a.m.
Jax Backus is the son of Katie and Sgt. Jeremy Backus, Company C, 3rd Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.

With Jax's due date being Dec. 27, Katie said she never anticipated giving birth to the first child of the year.

"But, it's kind of cool because he was born on the first," said Jeremy. "My brother was on the sixth and I was the 28th of January, so we're all January babies."

The hospital gave them a gift basket to celebrate the occasion. The basket included items like books, a baby blanket, teething toys and a bottle of champagne to celebrate with.
