FORT SILL, Oklahoma (Sept. 14. 2018) -- More than 700 people ran or walked in the 25th Annual Marine Devil Dog event at Fort Sill, Sept. 8. The mild snap from the blistering summer heat made the morning event more pleasant, some participants commented.

The Marine Artillery Detachment organized the event, while the Fort Sill Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation cohosted.

The event raises money for Marine unit functions to help defray costs for junior enlisted Marines. Participants paid $25 that included a commemorative T-shirt, and they could choose to compete in the half marathon, 5k and 10k distances; or a free one-mile fun run.

Marine Capt. Stephen Waite, Marine Battery commander, overall event organizer, said the event was a success.

Results of the fundraiser take about a week to tally, but he stated that the Marines and MWR raised more than $20,000.

"We made our fundraiser goal and couldn't be happier with the turnout by the Lawton-Fort Sill community," he said. "We had over 700 people register and 554 racers present at the event. The Marine Artillery Detachment here at Fort Sill would like to thank the Fort Sill-Lawton community for their support in this year's Devil Dog Run. The weather couldn't have been better."

Riley Anders, daughter of Lt. Col. Mark Anders who works on post, ran the 5k. Anders said she enjoyed the run.

The Devil Dog produced the following overall winners in each category except the fun run. Names listed are first through fifth place. Half marathon: Jake Fiske, Christopher McGuire, Vandella Squire, James Rockrohr, and Maximo Ramierz. 5k run: Zack Branning, Danny Garcia, Wyndean Large, Kenny Harold, and Taylor Richardson. 10k run: John Ouimette, Don Tidwell, Chad Ernst, Eric Lichtenberg, and Peter Worrall.

Top winners in age categories received recognition by way of trophies and/or medals for the 5k and 10k: under age 17 male and female; age 18 to 29 male and female; 30 to 39 male and female; 40 to 49 male and female; and over 50 male and female. The half-marathon race did not separate by age, but by overall winner for male and female participants.

Numerous Marines, who are students and cadre here, served along the routes and adjacent to the routes to assist participants who needed help.

Volunteers established refreshment tables for competitors, while the 77th Army Band provided music.
