BRUSSELS -- On Sept. 11, 2001 at 8:45 a.m., the first plane flew into the north side of Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. What started as a cool, crystal clear New York morning was overshadowed by plumes of black smoke and fire. This day would lead to a series of tragic events that not only changed America and the world but would be defined forever in history as one of America's darkest days.
Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation hosted their annual 9/11 5K Remembrance Run Sept. 8 in Brussels. This marks the 17th year anniversary or the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and Pennsylvania attacks in 2001. This annual run is a reflection on the lives lost, those who put their lives on the line, and the unity and resiliency of the American people.
It was a sunny and cool morning as 39 participants came to pay their respects, including Raymond Myers, deputy garrison manager at U.S. Army Garrison Benelux in Brussels, and his family. Dan Fraizer, supervisory sports specialist for Brussels Fitness Center, gave a heartfelt memorial speech and brought one of the younger participants forward to send the runners on their way with a robust "on your marks, get set, GO!"After the race, participants helped themselves to free t-shirts and refreshments.
The community is grateful for participants coming out and paying their respects by remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
