Labor Day weekend marks the end of summer; a period historically associated with increased mishaps. This holiday weekend allows us to take a well-deserved break, relax and recharge. At the same time, we must continuously manage risk.

Sound judgment should extend to everything we do. I expect everyone to act professionally, use the buddy system, and display self-discipline and professionalism at all times. I expect all to be responsible and accountable in the use of alcohol and prevention of sexual assaults. Impaired driving, texting while driving and speeding are unacceptable and illegal; driving while fatigued is equally dangerous. I expect all of us to exercise sound judgment and realize that we are all only one decision away from making a life-changing or fatal mistake.

Prior to this holiday weekend, I expect leaders to talk to their subordinates about their activities and review safe practices for otherwise "routine" events such as swimming, hiking, barbequing and other outdoor activities. We must remain vigilant and ensure our risk management practices are in place. Risk management is a leader responsibility. More importantly, we have a shared responsibility to look out for one another. We are all collectively responsible for one another.

As we transition into the fall season we still have unusually hot weather. Wherever your activities take you, remember to remain hydrated. Thank you for your selfless service and tireless support of our mission in the Republic of Korea. Have a great holiday!
