GRAFENWOEHR, Germany -- The U.S Army Garrison Bavaria branch of American Forces Network provides U.S. radio news, information and entertainment programming to Active, Guard and Reserve service members, Department of Defense civilians and contract employees, and their families overseas, on board Navy and Coast Guard ships, and other authorized users within the USAG footprint.

AFN Bavaria does more than play the latest top-rated songs. It concentrates on the USAG Bavaria community at large. The goal is to accurately inform the community, entertain and assist with community events.

AFN saves the community money, time and other resources by creating an information platform for the community at no cost.

If you are a listener of AFN, you may wonder why the playlist varies. Or you may ask, what is AFN's purpose? How do I market, highlight or simply announce my organization's special events?

USAG Bavaria AFN station manager, Sgt. 1st Class Jaquetta Gooden, sat down to answer these questions and more.

What is AFN Bavaria's primary focus to accomplish its mission?

AFN Bavaria is committed to bringing relevant and entertaining radio to the U.S. military stationed within the USAG Bavaria area of responsibility.

How does AFN Bavaria carry out this mission?

AFN Bavaria develops Soldiers and leaders who provide relevant, targeted force protection and command information, news and entertainment to DOD personnel and their families throughout the USAG Bavaria footprint in support of commanders to maintain readiness and morale by giving their messages the widest possible reach.

What is AFN Bavaria's priorities/capabilities?

AFN Bavaria's top priority is the radio mission. We are a radio station and it is our job to ensure we are providing our community with the most up-to-date command information and news partnered with some entertainment.

What are other ways AFN works toward customer satisfaction?

AFN Bavaria provides the latest music, news and information services on a number of FM stations broadcasting throughout seven communities, which includes; Amberg, Ansbach/Katterbach, Garmisch, Grafenwoehr, Hohenfels, Illesheim and Vilseck.

How does AFN Bavaria choose its programing or music playlist?

The best way to describe AFN "The Eagle" is Top 40. Specifically, it is a mix between Progressive Hot Adult Contemporary and Contemporary Hit Radio formats with some considerations taken to cater to the overseas military community. The American Forces Network Radio Division of the AFN Broadcast Center in Riverside, California is responsible for selecting the music that makes up the AFN "The Eagle" playlist. The radio team makes music selections based on current music charts, research and demographic data.

How is the music rotation decided?

The radio staff at the AFN Broadcast Center uses commercial music scheduling software that rotates a pre-selected group of categories based on the charts mentioned before.

How does a unit or organization get on the radio?

Units and approved organizations that fall within the USAG Bavaria footprint can fill out and submit a publicity request by visiting www.myafn.net. Once the request is submitted, a notification goes to our public email box for processing.

Our standard is for clients or customers to submit request within 30 days of their event. However, we do understand that sometimes unforeseen things happen, and when they do, we ask that you reach out to us as soon as possible so we can provide you with the best service possible.

How do USAG Bavaria listeners market, highlight or simply announce organizational special events?

AFN Bavaria has the capability to provide a live radio remote broadcast from an event. It is important to keep in mind that not every event constitutes a live radio remote broadcast. This is something that my team will work with you on once a publicity request is submitted, and will answer any questions you may have.

The AFN Bavaria team develops and produces radio commercials and radio newscast based on events and trainings going on in the USAG Bavaria area of responsibility.

Is there anything else you would like to add?
