KILLEEN, TX - Seven active duty Soldiers assigned to units on Fort Hood, graduated August 9th from Central Texas College's Military Articulation Paramedic program.

The program, the first of its kind for CTC, allows active duty Soldiers to earn their paramedic certification in less time than traditionally required, all while maintaining their active duty requirement.

Congressman John Carter, was one of the distinguished guest speakers for the evening.

"You are the first, a first of something definitely needed for the Army," Carter said. "So I really appreciate what we are doing here today; this will help men and women in uniform improve their skills while serving and meeting their obligations in the military."

While the Soldiers have graduated from the program, they still will need to receive their certification through testing with the National Registry to be able to officially practice as a paramedic.

"Military Articulation Paramedic program gives the opportunities to expand the knowledge so they will be even more effective Soldiers," Carter said. "It gives them skills they can use in the workforce when they get out."

The class salutatorian and 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team Soldier, Cpl. Jewel Lewis, 215th Brigade Support Battalion, was excited to have finished the course.

"It was an honor graduating this course," said Lewis. "It was a long 9 and a half months, but it was good. We were able to advance our medical knowledge and I think it's a very good opportunity for all the medics, but also people who are interested in the medical field."

Lewis and most of her classmates are planning to continue their education by taking the offered Army courses, to become flight medics.

With support from government officials like Carter, Central Texas College administrators, and Fort Hood leadership, the classes will continue to be offered for Soldiers who are interested.

"I foresee this program getting more and more popular, every year," said Carter. "I hope to see it expand and grow. All of you that are part of this first both family and Soldiers be proud of the ground you're plowing right now, because it's going to bear great fruit in the future."

The second cohort is already underway but the third cohort is scheduled to start in June 2019. Soldiers wishing to sign up for the program must first complete an admissions checklist. Information on all eligibility requirements, admissions, prerequisites and tuition assistance is available at the Fort Hood Education Services Division located in the Soldier Development Center, Bldg. 33009, room G201 or by calling CTC at 254-526-1265.
