FORT HOOD, TX - The early July heat did not stop the Soldiers, families and friends of the Greywolf Brigade from coming out and bidding farewell to one commander and welcoming a new one during a change of command ceremony, on Cooper Field, July 3.

Maj. Gen. Paul Calvert, commanding general, 1st Cavalry Division, officiated the ceremony as Col. John Woodward, outgoing commander, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team "Greywolf" passed the reins to Col. Kevin Capra.

"The ability to conduct decisive action is realized through disciplined execution, in management of training, maintenance, property, and administrative systems and processes," said Calvert. "Over the last two years, Greywolf has routinely demonstrated that it is prepared to conduct decisive action on behalf of our nation. This is truly a formation that is ready now and Col. John Woodward has been the driver of the readiness realized by this great team."

Calvert went on to congratulate Woodward on his ability to visualize, describe, direct, lead and assess as a commander.

Woodward, a Texas native commanded the Greywolf brigade for the last 27 months. He was responsible for the brigade's successful deployment to Kuwait in support of Operation Spartan Shield, where at one time Soldiers were executing operations in 9 different countries simultaneously.

"The unit is its people, the people I've had the opportunity to serve with over these past 27 months have made it so much fun," Woodward said. "To be able to build a team, test our will at the National Training Center was amazing, however, to be able to deploy, with such a diverse mission in the middle-east was even more challenging and satisfying."

Woodward also thanked his family for their enduring support of his time in command.

Capra comes to the Greywolf brigade as their new commander, however, he is no stranger to Fort Hood or the First Team, having previously served in the Blackjack brigade. More recently, Capra is completing an assignment from the Joint Staff where he worked in the National Command Center as a Presidential Strike Advisor and the Assistant Deputy Director for Operations in Washington D.C.

"It is my distinct honor and privilege to join the team and serve along so many great warriors," said Capra. "I look forward to working with each and every one of you as we prepare for our future missions."

Calvert welcomed Capra and his family back to Fort Hood, and gave him a few tips.

"Trust your instincts, set your standards high, love your team and be yourself," Calvert said. "You have my full faith, trust and confidence, enjoy the opportunity to command."
