Staff Sgt. Michael R. Scott has served 14 years in the Army as a microwave systems operator-maintainer and is currently deployed with Task Force Warrior to Forward Operating Base Fenty in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.
Assigned to Fort Polk in March 2008, Scott worked for the 88th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, before volunteering to deploy with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st MEB.
As base operations NCOIC at Forward Operating Base Fenty, Scott manages contracts valued at nearly $300,000, monitors local national laborers and supervises the relocation of hundreds of shipping containers, living quarters and barriers on the rapidly expanding base.
Scott also works to improve living conditions and maintain morale of his Soldiers, who are residing at a separate location from the main body of the 1st MEB during the 15-month deployment.
"Staff Sergeant Scott exemplifies both the flexibility and versatility of NCOs in Task Force Warrior," said Command Sgt. Maj. Arthur R. Vanwyngarden.
Scott served as the base operations sergeant major in the absence of Sgt. Maj. Angelia Brody, who commented on the outstanding way in which he handled operations and managed the small
number of Soldiers assigned to Team Fenty.
"Staff Sergeant Scott is highly regarded and known for his thoughtful guidance and wise decision making," said Maj. Rodney Johnson of Task Force Warrior and FOB Fenty Base Operations.
Johnson said, "Staff Sergeant Scott's leadership deserves high accolades, and his small group of Soldiers receive many commendations for excellence in customer service."
Base operations is a non-standard mission, but important to the warfighter on the ground. Team Fenty supports Task Force Duke, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division out of Fort Hood, Texas.
