Military Spouse Appreciation Day
What is it'
On May 8, 2009, Army leaders at all levels, senior spouses, Soldiers, and family members, will verbally and visually pay tribute to military spouses through recognition, shared stories, and extensive internal media coverage, by acknowledging that, much as the NCO is the backbone of the Army, military spouses are the backbone of the families who support our Soldiers; they are the silent heroes who are essential to the strength of the nation.
Twenty-five years ago, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation officially recognizing Military Spouse Day. The commemoration is held the Friday before Mother's day every year to show appreciation for the sacrifices of military spouses. Army spouses routinely put the welfare of their Soldier, family, and nation above their own. After almost a decade at war and multiple deployments, our Active, Reserve, and National Guard spouses continue to support America's Army unconditionally. We salute military spouses; Army families equal Army Strong!
Why is it important to the Army'
Spouses are essential to the Army and a strong nation, as they support their Soldiers. For more than 234 years, spouses have supported their Soldiers on the field and on the home front. The support and dedication of military spouses is vital not only to the Soldier's family, but to the Army as well. Much as the NCOs are the backbone of the Army, military spouses are the backbone of the families who support our nation's Soldiers. Additionally, Army spouses are community leaders, careerists, mothers, fathers, and Soldiers. The Army pays tribute to all military spouses. We salute you; you are our silent heroes.
What continued efforts does the Army have planned for the future'
In 2007, the Army, through the Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management (ACSIM), instituted the Army Family Covenant and the Army Community Covenant, in part to recognize the commitment and increasing sacrifices that our families make every day and to acknowledge that the strength of our Soldiers comes from the strength of their families. This tribute will provide the Army another opportunity to reassure Soldiers and families who the Army recognizes the sacrifices of military spouses, is continually committed to providing them a quality of life commensurate with their sacrifice, and will continue to provide families a strong, supportive environment where they can thrive. The Army is committed to improving family readiness through funding of programs, better health care, housing, schools, youth services, child care, education and employment opportunities, and we will continue to build upon and improve the tenets of the Army Family Covenant.
