CSM Eric R. McCray is a native of Conway, Arkansas. He enlisted in the United States Army Reserves on January 9, 1990 as a 76V (Material Storage and Handling Specialist) under the Delayed Entry Program. He completed Basic Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in the summer of 1990 and graduated the Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Lee, Virginia in December 1990. CSM McCray later transitioned into regular Active Duty service on July 14, 1992 and changed his MOS to 16T, Patriot Missile Crewmember.

His civilian education includes an Associate of Arts in General Education from Central Baptist College, Bachelor of Science in Social Psychology from Park University and a Master of Arts in Business Organizational Security Management from Webster University.
