Public Service Recognition Week
What is it'
Each year, the president and Congress designate the first Monday through Sunday in May, as Public Service Recognition Week (PSRW). For 25 years, PSRW has been celebrated to honor public employees and showcase the array of services they provide. Activities are planned from Maine to Alaska, The PSRW event in Washington, D.C., staged by the Public Employees Roundtable and Partnership for Public Service marks the 25th celebration on the National Mall. Visitors will have the opportunity to get an up-close look at how government works. Up to 60,000 people attend the event every year to see demonstrations, exhibits and static displays of participating government agencies, state and local and federal. This year's theme is "Government goes Green". Many displays will show how government agencies carry forward environmentally friendly and energy-efficient initiatives.
What will the Army be doing'
Visitors to the National Mall can expect to see Army assets including: An M1A2 Abrams Main Battle Tank, an M2A3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle, 82nd Airborne Stryker Orientation and Information Teams, members of the 101st Airborne and the 10th Mountain Division, a Tactical Fire Fighting Truck, K-9 demonstrations, The 3rd Infantry Regiment "The Old Guard" and The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps. Displays highlighting Twilight Tattoo and Spirit of America - events put on by the Military District of Washington - will also be on hand.
What is it important to the Army'
The Mall event is a powerful, once-a-year opportunity for agencies and the military to demonstrate the services they provide to the nation. PSRW captures the accomplishments and heritage of Army units, soldiers and Army civilian personnel and highlights our agency as a desirable place to have a career. Visitors will see the high-tech systems used by the Army and meet Soldiers and civilians who support the nation's largest and oldest military service. It will also be a historic day for several military members as they become U.S. citizens after taking part in a naturalization ceremony. This year also takes on special significance as the Secretary of the Army has made 2009 the "Year of the Non-Commissioned Officer." Several exhibits will reflect this focus and theme.
