More than 750 runners of all ages converged on Rock Island Arsenal Saturday, May 19, to participate in the Armed Forces America's Kids Run and "Run the Rock" races.

Command Sgt. Maj. Brian Heffernan, of the U.S. Army Garrison, Rock Island Arsenal, was a key organizer of the inaugural Run the Rock event.

"We wanted to open the post to more people from the surrounding community," Heffernan said. "The Quad Cities is a running community, and we knew the turnout would be good. We expected about 500 runners, and we ultimately had 759. "

The America's Kids Run events included age group events at 100 yards for children under age 5, for children age 5-6 one-half mile, one mile for children aged 7 and 8, and two miles for children ages 9-13.

The inaugural Run the Rock event featured 5k and 10k races with overall winners, as well as winners in categories by age group through age 70.

Winners in the 5k overall were: First place, Phil Young, 16:01; second place Rick Pahl, 16:35; and third place Trevor Viren, 17:32. In the 10k the winners were Tristan Coughlin, 34:01; Don Fredericks; 38:46; and Christian Esparza, 39:55.
