The Army today awarded its first contract for a project funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The $33.2 million contract is part of the first phase of a $57 million complex for recuperating injured Soldiers and their families at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas.
The three-building complex includes a 140,000-square-foot barracks capable of housing 232 injured Soldiers. The project also includes a Soldier and family assistance center, and a warrior care headquarters and administrative building. Design is scheduled to start in June 2009 with construction of the complex completed by fall 2010.
"The economic stimulus funds allocated to the Army will help provide Army families a quality of life that matches the quality of their service, and enhance care for our wounded warriors," said Secretary of the Army Pete Geren.
The Army was allocated $2.2 billion of the $787 billion ARRA legislation to provide much-needed improvements to installations, with an emphasis on hospitals, child development centers, barracks projects, family housing, community centers, and other facilities for Soldiers, their families, and civilian employees. ARRA funds will also be used for energy efficiency initiatives and infrastructure repairs, including water projects, electrical grids, steam lines, and sewers.
