ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill. - Joint Munitions Command staff recently participated in a Sales and Operations Planning Workshop to improve the future planning of ammo management across the materiel enterprise.

"Sales and Operations Planning is an industry best practice planning body focused on planning improvements and decision making in business," said Samantha Smith, Sales and Operations Planning Lead, Army Materiel Command. "AMC and JMC adopted S&OP for the wholesale planning of secondary items in 2013. Since then, AMC has realized an improved forecasting accuracy by more than 50 percent and realized a $4 billion reduction in unneeded inventory."

During the workshop, more than 66 JMC workforce members received training and developed the S&OP for direct implementation across its installations. The workshop and education sessions were designed to include the S&OP process overview, roles and responsibilities, as well as the design and development of the inputs, outputs and execution of the demand review, supply review, integrated reconciliation review and management business reviews.

JMC workshop participants included leads for demand and supply planning; material requirements planning; financial managers, metrics analysts, staff who manage ammo storage capacity and civilian executive assistants.

Rhonda VanDeCasteele, Executive Director, JMC, provided opening remarks for the workshop. "We welcome this opportunity to be with you the next few days to try to figure out how to improve our S&OP process. It is key to our centralized planning initiatives and has really helped us to realize what we need to do better."

The S&OP five-day workshop was designed with the goal of training ammo management staff for several major roles as it prepares for future expansion.

There were two goals for the training added Smith. "First of all your education; I want you to get as much as you can out of this week for yourself, for your professional development, for your installations, for your headquarters and for the Warfighter. Secondly, I want to make sure that you can improve how you do your business."

The workshop was split into several breakout sessions designed to focus on the different roles associated with JMC's core competencies. The Management Education session included the process overview, roles and responsibilities, as well as how S&OP is executed each month. The Demand workshop session included the design and development of the inputs, outputs and execution of the demand review. The Integrated Reconciliation Review session included the design and development of the reconciliation review of demand, supply and financial inputs. The Management Business Review session included the design and development of the overall plan review. The Supply Planning Review session included the design and development of the inputs, outputs and execution of the supply review. Specific headquarters and installation staff members were selected to attend the appropriate session based on their individual job responsibilities.

Joint Munitions Command produces ammunition for the Department of Defense. The primary mission of JMC is to manage the receipt, storage, issue, demilitarization and production of conventional ammunition for all U.S. military services. JMC is the sustainment and logistics integrator for life-cycle management of ammunition and provides a global presence of technical support to U.S. combat units wherever they are stationed or deployed.
